Sailing to Your Dream Job: My Proven Framework from Career Networking

Poor Offboarding

As a recruiter and career coach with over 30 years of experience, I’ve helped thousands of professionals navigate the turbulent waters of the job market.

In my book, Career Networking: How to Unlock the Hidden Job Market, I share a proven framework to bypass the chaos of traditional job searches and tap into the hidden market, where it’s estimated that over 80% of jobs are secured through networking.

This blog distils the essence of Career Networking, outlines my three-pillar framework, and shares a real-life success story to show you how to sail smoothly toward your dream role.

Why I Wrote Career Networking: How to Unlock the Hidden Job Market

I’ve seen too many talented professionals struggle in the “red ocean” of job applications, competing against countless others for advertised roles. It’s a disheartening process that often feels like shouting into the wind.

My mission in writing Career Networking: How to Unlock the Hidden Job Market is to steer you toward a “blue ocean”—a market of one where competition becomes irrelevant.

By building authentic relationships, you can access unadvertised opportunities, secure referrals, and position yourself as the go-to candidate employers trust.

I wrote the book as a practical guide, designed to dismantle barriers like fear of rejection, the belief that networking is only for extroverts, or the misconception that you need a vast network to succeed. Whether you’re between jobs, seeking new opportunities, or planning your next career pivot, my Career Networking book offers a step-by-step process, supported by real-life examples and a companion workbook, to help you master networking and achieve long-term career success.

My Three-Pillar Framework for Networking Success

My framework in Career Networking rests on three pillars, each crafted to help you unlock the hidden job market and land your ideal role:

1. Craft an Unforgettable Trigger
A trigger is more than an elevator pitch—it’s a clear, concise, and memorable statement that communicates your expertise and the value you bring. It’s designed to stick in people’s minds, prompting them to think of you when opportunities arise. I guide you to create a trigger by identifying a problem your target audience faces, positioning yourself as the solution, and crafting a jargon-free phrase that passes the “hashtag test.” For example, a data analyst might say, “I turn raw data into insights that drive profits.” In Chapter 8, I provide a framework: pinpoint the problem, highlight your solution, and weave in trigger phrases that make you memorable. This ensures your connections can confidently refer you when the right moment strikes.

2. Warm Up Your Ties Strategically
I categorise relationships into three types: close ties (10-20% of your network, like friends and colleagues), dormant ties (40%, faded connections), and weak ties (50%, acquaintances). Each offers unique value. Close ties are trusted but share similar information; dormant and weak ties provide diverse, untapped opportunities. My approach is to “romance” these connections by adding value, whether through sharing insights, offering help, or reconnecting thoughtfully. For instance, in Chapter 8, I share scripts to reconnect your dormant ties.

By warming up ties, you also boost your “KLT score” (Know, Like, Trust), making others eager to vouch for you. I also emphasise focusing on “Connectors” and “Givers” in your network, as they amplify your reach.

3. Build Your KLT Score for Referrals
The ultimate goal is to reach the “tipping point” where connections feel confident vouching for you. This requires a high KLT score, built through consistent, authentic interactions. Drawing on Robert Cialdini’s principles of influence—reciprocation, liking, social proof, authority, scarcity, and consistency—I show how etiquette and persuasion supercharge your efforts. In Chapter 9, I share tips from networking experts like Susan RoAne, who advocates handwritten thank-you notes, and Dorie Clark, who advises honesty when ending conversations at events. Simple acts—like arriving early, respecting others’ time, or offering value without expecting immediate returns (as Adam Rifkin does)—elevate your credibility. These actions ensure your connections feel safe recommending you, mitigating any social or professional risk.

A Real-Life Success Story: Rod’s Three-Week Triumph

To illustrate the power of this framework, let me share the story of Rod, one of my coaching clients. Rod was a National Sales Manager in fast-moving consumer goods, but after 15 years with the same company, he was made redundant. Expecting a gruelling nine-month job search through traditional applications, Rod was astonished to land a new role in just three weeks by following my networking approach.

Instead of scouring job boards, Rod created a market of one. He reached out to Jim, a former colleague he hadn’t spoken to in years—a dormant tie. Rod’s thoughtful reconnection, rooted in their past trust, delighted Jim, who knew, liked, and trusted him. Jim referred Rod to his boss, who quickly realised Rod was the ideal candidate. With Jim’s endorsement, Rod faced no competition—the position was his. Jim also benefited, earning kudos for his referral and saving the company recruitment fees. As Rod thrives in his new role, Jim’s reputation continues to grow—a win-win.

This story, detailed in my book, shows how warming up dormant ties and leveraging KLT can unlock hidden opportunities fast.

Key Insights for Your Job Search

Career Networking: How to Unlock the Hidden Job Market reframes networking as a mutual value exchange, not a one-sided favour. I address common objections, like feeling you have nothing to offer or fearing rejection, and provide tailored strategies. Introverts can leverage their listening skills and preference for quality connections, while extroverts can harness their energy and broad reach. I also emphasise a growth mindset, encouraging you to view networking as a learnable skill.

My Blue Ocean Strategy, inspired by W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne, is a game-changer.

By networking proactively (before you need a job), tapping into the hidden market, and securing referrals, you avoid crowded job boards.

Understanding your motivations—prevention-focused (safety-driven) or promotion-focused (growth-driven)—helps tailor your approach. For example, prevention-focused readers can weigh risks and stick to a plan, while promotion-focused ones can ride waves of optimism and explore creative alternatives.

Why This Matters Today

With 61% of workers holding post-school qualifications and remote work expanding the applicant pool globally, standing out is tougher than ever. Career Networking: How to Unlock the Hidden Job Market blends traditional face-to-face networking with modern tools like LinkedIn, offering a process-driven format with actionable exercises.

The benefits extend beyond a new job—networking builds confidence, fosters lasting relationships, and creates a resource library for lifelong career support.
